Don’t Do This When Trying to Book More Clients

I saw an Instagram story recently where a photography educator shared a poll asking what other photographers goals for the year were…

The resounding and unanimous answer?

“Book more clients!” “Fill my calendar!” “Take twice as many weddings/portraits!”

Although, as any photographer knows, booking more clients can be tougher than it seems.

Finding your ideal client can feel like a mystery you’re trying to solve, and even once you find them, how do you get them to send an inquiry to your inbox?

While the answer to that question is wayyyyyy too long for today’s blog post, I do want to share one MAJOR mistake that you can avoid when trying to book more clients this year!

In today’s post, we’re talking about:

  • One BIG mistake photographers tend to make when trying to book more clients
  • What you can do instead starting TODAY
  • How you can dig into this pain point even more and book out your calendar

So… the big mistake?

You want to get more bookings, but you need to get your name out there, right?

Logically, you assume to get your name out there that means you need to MARKET yourself and your work like crazy!

And by “market,” we usually mean… Instagram posts.

Don’t get me wrong. Instagram is an amazing strategy tool… but it is just ONE strategy tool, like a single wrench in your tool belt of marketing.

Rather than driving yourself crazy trying to post on Instagram every day (not to mention carousels, stories, reels, lives, oh my goodness…) here’s what is more effective:

Focus on refining your message and elevating your brand.

If that sounds confusing or like way too broad of a suggestion, let me break it down a little.

Rather than posting willy-nilly on Instagram, sharing any and every beautiful photo you have ever taken, you need to hone in on a strategy.

You need to take the time to ask yourself what your ideal client is looking for and how to elevate your brand to meet their needs and desires.

When you have a specific, refined brand message, you will create consistency.

Consistency begets trust; trust begets bookings.

Let that be your holy grail phrase as you dig into a strategy for your brand.

Let’s be honest: the photography market can be competitive! Having pretty images just isn’t enough.

Instead, to draw in your ideal client, you need a specific, niched brand message that speaks to them loudly through the masses.

“Marketing” yourself by posting 24/7 on Instagram may get you some bookings… but they might not be the most aligned bookings and will leave your marketing strategy feeling weak.
